Lake Asbury Ladies’ Club By Wanda Green
After all the preparations and planning for the Fall Flea market it was a tossup as to whether or not we would be able to have it since the weather was bad leading up to it. Just look around Lake Asbury at all the damage caused mostly from wind. We had power outages and trees down, lots of limbs and moss on the ground. We did not have many folks set up to sell in the park. We did not get as many shoppers to buy in the Country Store. We had good food and good baked goods. We made about $350. Clear. I believe every neighborhood had their Festivals and such on that weekend. Even competing with Winn Dixie’s Parking Lot sales.
For the Spring Flea Market we’ll try to find a better Saturday to have it.
We usually have the Spring Flea Market the last Saturday in April. But we will look at other times. Easter is April 9th, the Building is already rented on April 8th.
All ladies of Lake Asbury are invited to join us. We meet the first Tuesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. except for August. For any other information , call Sharon Pierce at 282-8150.

Lake Asbury Chili Cook-off was a Success!!!
Alert – Alert - Alert!!!! We found the best pot of chili in Lake Asbury. Saturday October 29th was the right night to be at the Lake Asbury Community Center. The Lake Asbury Ladies Club hosted the LA Chili Cook-off competition that night. There were 8 pots of chili to be judged. And our judges were up to the task. The judges for our cook-off were firemen from our Station 15. They were up to the challenge. The firemen did not know who made which pot as we keep the cooks identity a secrete. And we had 8 different entries including those with and without beans, ‘kids’ chili and even a pot of vegan chili. But the firemen independently judged the winner to be Nancy Luther. We even had a pot made by a family that moved into our community that very day. If you were not there then you missed a good time. As promised it was a good night to eat a bowl of chili as we watched the Florida-Georgia Game on the LACC’s new TV. The kiddo’s even had face-painting offered by Emily Bryon and her friend Ryan. Thank you to those who participated in this event. We hope you had fun. Be sure to be on the look-out for the next event, Christmas in Lake Asbury on Dec 17th, hosted by the Lake Asbury Ladies Club. Nutria have been spotted in the North and South Lakes. The concern is that they will cause damage to our dams. So, the Florida Fish and Wild Life Conservation Commission (FWC) have been contacted to deal with disposal of these invasive rodents. I found this interesting information about these little critters. Nutria (Myocastor coypus) aren't really rats, but this South American wetland-dwelling rodent certainly looks like a rat with its long reddish teeth, twitchy whiskers and round tail with little hair on it, although it's actually more closely related to a porcupine or a capybara. Some of them can grow up to 2.5 feet long — not counting the foot-long tail — and weigh in at a husky 20 pounds. Nutria can be rather social animals and sometimes live in large colonies, reproducing prolifically. Females have two or three litters every year, each consisting of five to seven young. These animals mature quickly and remain with their mothers for only a month or two. In some areas, booming nutria populations have become troublesome. What do they do with all that raw rodent power? Well, in some places they destroy wetlands and crops, cause soil erosion with their burrows, damage human-engineered flood control systems and spread disease. FWC has declared a year round open season on Nutria, similar to the open season on opossums, raccoons and coyotes. With that in mind, and to ensure the integrity of our dams, our goal is to reduce/eliminate the population in Lake Asbury. Lake Asbury ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FORM - MAIL TO
